Writing Ludwig
On the composition of Ludwig, L!lburne says:
“The melding of lyrics and music in this song was pure serendipity, an unintentional collaboration with my old mate John Harris: his words, my music.
“The tune had been kicking around for years before I taught it to our then garage band, The Broken Hearts, at one of our Sunday sessions. John was running late and by the time he arrived the band had the chords down pretty well. John burst in with his usual gusto, guitar in hand and launched straight into his latest song, music and lyrics. We were all impressed. Pure Harr!s, it was hilarious, wryly witty. We then played him the other ‘new piece’. It was rude of me, I know, but a few minutes in, I started to sing John’s lyric over my chords. To everyone’s delight, it was a perfect fit. Even John preferred it. Hence the Ludwig we have now.
“I’m sorry John for stealing your song but I think you’d agree it was worth it.”
After many years and encouragement from friends, L!lburne|Harr!s finally got around to recording Ludwig at Shanghai Twang. Under the guidance of Phil Bailey, producer Pete Grandison developed the string arrangement, while the all male choir comprised drummer Pete Smith and bass-player Bailey as well as the two songwriters.
By special arrangement with RTR-FM, Perth’s Sound Alternative, the L!lburne|Harr!s single, Ludwig, had its broadcast premiere on Sunday Morning Coming Down. Tim Walker was the host and he kindly treated his audience to a selection of L!lburne songs leading into the launch.
Many thanks to Tim and RTR for their generous support and the exposure.
