Pete Grandison – Shanghai Twang Studio
Ian Lilburne’s debut album Ghosts and its companion piece, the EP, Against the Odds, were recorded, mixed and mastered by Pete Grandison.
Pete is the man, the musician, and the producer behind the workings of Shanghai Twang, a boutique recording and production studio based in Fremantle, Western Australia. Pete works in all forms of music and audio production, but specialises in production for singer / songwriters and the recording, mixing, and mastering of roots, rock, folk and world music. Pete has recently built a new studio (designed by John Sayers), with three separate recording rooms and a large mixing and mastering suite.
Pete has been performing and experimenting with music for more than thirty years. He is an accomplished musician, playing acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin, bouzouki, bass, synthesizers and various computer-based sampling and audio tools.
Pete’s song Cross the Border won the inaugural WAM Song of the Year in 1991. More recently, songs he has produced for others have won and been runners-up in these awards. He has composed music for television and short film, and developed a strong profile as a specialist mixing and mastering engineer, an arranger of music and hired-gun for contemporary singer songwriters.
Pete has performed with some notable Perth bands, including the acclaimed Devils on Horseback, Bluegrass Parkway, Dammit Janet, Dot Combo, The Reel Thing, Errol Tout, Miles to Go, The Tenants and The Blue Celts. He has performed on scores of WA recordings and, in some of the acts listed above, supported artists such as The Pouges, The Proclaimers, Marianne Faithful, Billy Bragg and Bruce Cockburn.
As a performer in his own right, Pete has fronted many Celtic and Irish music bands and performed at venues in Hong Kong, Macau and throughout Australia.
